- Architecture and Spatial Design
The Department of Architecture and Spatial Design is a vibrant community committed to the highest quality of teaching and research.
We are at the forefront of contemporary developments in design education and practice and have established a strong reputation for the quality and innovation of our courses. Our staff are drawn from some of Europe’s best practices and combine experimentation with practical experience. Our students have had success in numerous competitions, including RIBA (silver medals in 2002 and 2003 and bronze in 2004 and 2006). We enjoy close links with industry and practice. The Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media & Design is situated on the East London City fringe, a vibrant area recognised as a centre of excellence for both art and design. The Department’s new £30 million Science Centre includes a fully adaptable ‘SuperLab’ for 280+ students.
Our new Science Centre is equipped with the latest teaching and research laboratories and a multi-purpose gym where researchers can study the effects of physical exercise. Also on campus are food preparation areas and treatment rooms for the many practical elements of our courses. Other state-of-the-art equipment includes all types of separation and spectrophotometry (chemistry), air displacement plesythmography (measurement of body composition), iso-kinetic dynamometry and gait analysis (sports science) and ultrasound and laser therapy (sports therapy).

The department brings together a wide spectrum of subject expertise, combining professionally recognised qualifications with innovative and socially orientated courses.
The department is one of the largest of its kind in the UK. With approximately one hundred specialist academic staff, it offers a wide range of high-quality courses in Law, Governance and International Relations. Students can choose single-discipline courses such as the LLB and International Relations or multidisciplinary programmes such as Governance and Law, Development Studies or International Law and International Politics. There are also more vocational training programmes, such the Foundation degree in Advice Work.
