DASS put on prestigious 'Liminal' exhibition

27th March 2009

DASS staff and international alumni have been instrumental in putting on a prestigious exhibition this month, which explores cultural diversity and digital media.

The exhibition, entitled 'Liminal' is on at Rivington Place, a major publicly funded arts venue in London's New Media quarter, Hoxton. 'Liminal' intends to reveal the invisible thresholds of meaning that are associated with the power relations of the modern city.

DASS staff involved in the exhibition include Che-Guevara John, Chris Lane, Gautham Ravindram, Martha Chinouya, Tamsin Bradley and John Eversley. DASS alumni Philippe Chollet and Patrick Rhoden are also taking part.

Artworks include, Frictions of Distance, a time and space defying installation allowing people in London and Phnom Penh, Cambodia, to simultaneously walk in each others footsteps and Step into our World, which involves the exploration of a database of images and objects that can be contributed to and reconfigured by gallery visitors.

Iniva (the Institute of International Visual Arts) who have curated the exhibition in collaboration with DASS, create publications, multimedia, education and research projects, designed to bring the work of artists from culturally diverse backgrounds to the attention of the widest possible public.

The vision for Iniva's building at Rivington Place is to create a centre of excellence for the presentation and dissemination of ideas and practices in the contemporary visual arts, which have been consistently marginalised by mainstream cultural institutions.
