LMBS BAISTL Sector Group meets CEO of Eurostar

Thursday 12th March 2009 saw LMBS Sector Group - Business Analysis, Information Systems, Transport and Logistics (BAISTL) feature prominently in the front row at Railtex 2009, the three day event at Earls Court 2 billed as the ‘railway industry event of the year’.

High Speed University
Senior Lecturer Allison Wylde who coordinates the Security Industry Observatory attended the ‘Railnews’ sponsored presentation ‘A high-speed rail network for Britain’ given by Richard Brown CBE, the CEO of Eurostar UK Ltd since September 2002. Eurostars have been operating out of St Pancras International on ‘High Speed 1’ (HS1) since 2007 and LMBS already has a keen interest in the new links and the regeneration marching towards the University North Campus.

Allison, along with LMBS Visiting Professor Lester Hillman who for the last two decades worked on the building of HS1, valued a rare opportunity to discuss common interests with Richard Brown prior to his keynote presentation. The former Chairman of the Association of Train Operating Companies was later widely praised for his robust advocacy of the multi decade infrastructure investment challenges. An invitation to speak at the University is being explored, reinforcing long established links with the rail industry. Much of North Campus overlooks the London to Edinburgh East Coast Main Line; Stapleton House was opened 11th April 1991 by Sir Bob Reid then Chairman of British Railways Board (1990 – 1995).

Jobs in Transport and Logistics

Richard Brown took over the Presidency of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) in May 2008 with a focus on “attracting young professionals into the industry” and just prior to Railtex CILT released its 156 page ‘Guide to Careers in Logistics and Transport’ (20th February 2009). Opening Railtex 10th March Lord Adonis, Minister of State at the Department for Transport, along with Jeremy Candfield, Director General of the Railway Industry Association championed the ‘National Skills Academy for Railway Engineering’ (NSARE). The Academy will co-ordinate an innovative range of training provision, ranging from apprenticeship programmes through to leadership, management and technical innovation courses. There was a concurrent announcement by Network Rail of 1000 jobs which indicated something of the confidence at this 9th International Exhibition of Railway Equipment Systems and Services. Organisers Mack Brooks Exhibitions reported attendance figures at 10,730 drawn from 47 countries with numbers 22% up on the last event in 2007.
