Global Policy Institute expert cited in cover story of Europe's largest news magazine
8th December 2008
Dr Henning Meyer, Head of the European Programme at the Global Policy Institute, London Metropolitan University, was cited in a recent cover story of Der Spiegel, Europe’s largest news magazine.
The article entitled ‘Madame No’ which appeared in the print edition of Der Spiegel on December 1, 2008, took a critical look at German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s reaction to the ensuing recession engulfing Europe’s economies and her failure to take a more proactive and responsible role in managing the current crisis.
Dr Meyer was cited as saying that ‘in the context of Germany’s traditionally weak domestic demand, Angela Merkel’s hesitancy (to react more vigorously to the current economic challenges) is unintelligible.’ He further stated: ‘Germany - as Europe’s biggest economy - should play a leading role in the ongoing European attempts to cope with the crisis.’
Dr Meyer, who also writes a regular column for the Guardian’s Comment is Free website, has conducted intensive research into the side effects of globalisation and neoliberal economic policies, taking the view that a responsible but more comprehensive role of the state in economic planning and management is necessary in order for such debacles as the current financial and economic crisis to be avoided in the future.
