LMBS, Security and the Orient Express

On Tuesday 13th January 2009 the University forged a new ''Orient Express' communication link. London Metropolitan Business School (LMBS) welcomed two distinguished academics from Istanbul Turkey in taking forward the latest European FP7 funding bid. There was a chance to demonstrate Londonmet's international positioning, not least its proximity to a spectacular 'Orient Express' terminus at St Pancras International.

Security, Planning and the Orient Express

Professor Dr Ercan Oztemel Head of the Department of Industrial Engineering at Marmara and Associate Professor Dr Cemalettin Kubat Engineering Faculty Sakarya University met with Senior Lecturer Allison Wylde (who heads up the Londonmet FP7 bid) and Lester Hillman Visiting Professor within Business Analysis, Informations Systems, Transport and Logistics (BAISTL) Sector Group at LMBS.

The University of Marmara was founded as Hamidiye College of Higher Commercial Education on the 16th January 1883, now 126 years later as it has 60,000 students and numbers the Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan amongst its alumni.

Discussions concentrated on firstly security systems engineering - modelling and testing. Shared expertise in urban strategic planning was identified and following on from that  involvement in railway industries was discussed. At Marmara, the Tubitak Research Centre is rolling out a driver training simulation project and the Turkish visitors were keen to hear of LMBS research interests.

Pan Mediterranean Dimension
The expertise at Londonmet was reinforced in the latest EU FP7 funding bid, which was coordinated by Allison Wylde. MA student Moner Murtaja provided  Palestinian and Northern Cyprus dimensions to discussions as well as a perspective from the post-graduate community. Moner is presently completing his MA in European Studies and his international interests are recognised elsewhere including his role as advisor to the Rector of Eastern Mediterranean University Northern Cyprus.Londonmet is fortunate to be able to draw upon the diverse community in the immediate hinterland of North Campus and discussion continued over splendid Turkish cuisine. Associate Professor in Computer Science Dr Farhi Marir from the University's Knowledge Management Research Centre joined the group and complementing his professional expertise was a valuable North African and Algerian perspective as well as expertise in EU projects.

At either end of a 21st Century Orient Express it is clear that Londonmet and prospective partner institutions in Turkey have much in common, tracing  beginnings to the latter part of the 19th Century.

Londonmet extended warm birthday congratulations and presented birthday wishes for our guests by presenting a card their Vice Chancellor illustrating our fantastic business school graduate school building designed by Daniel Libeskind. We finished off by inviting our guests to sample the fabulous food available our excellent local Turkish Restaurant on Holloway Road.
