Bio

I graduated with a BSc (class 1) and PhD in biochmistry from the Uiversity of St Andrews and then did postdoctoral research on breast cancer, Queens University, Kingston, Ontario. On returning to the UK I have held academic posts in Oxford,Open Univerisity, Bath, Plymouth and more recently London Metropoliton University. These included teaching , research and senior management positions. I have been a panel member of the HEFCE RAE exercise and have published over 120 papers. My researc h has been underpinned by generating over £4m in grant income that has included the biosciences, enterprise initiatves and funding to support new forms of skills,learning. In addition I hold two Guest Professorships (China/Cuba) where I have research laboratories that are engaged in work on herbal medicine and animal/plant health. I am also actively engaged in developing the STEM agenda nationally.

Experience

I have research expertise in the following areas: 1. Biochemistry, molecular biology, biomedical sciences and plant medicines 2. Promoting health and health intervention strategies, this is based on being directly involved in attracting Health Action Zone status to Plymouth and Cornwall. More recently I have been involved in developing health promotion through the biosciences in London, this included addressing issues that relate to socio economic class and ethnicity. 3. Developing new forms of pedagogy that included e-technology 4. Developing research that can been applied for commercial exploitation At a national/regional level: Board member of STEM; Government SW (Skills),Widening Participation Groups (SW) and Bichemical Society (Professional and Education)
